DIY - Unlimited Onions

By Andrew

A flavourful meal is something that we can all appreciate.  I personally like to add some savor to my dinners by adding some onions, especially caramelized ones!  So you can imagine my surprise when I stumbled across an article explaining how I can get an almost limitless supply of onions for free!  Remember folks, spring is on the way.  The steps to do this below are so
easy that onions would be a perfect addition to your sustainable vegetable garden.  If you don’t have a yard or a balcony, that’s not a problem.  Just get a small pot and you can grow some food on your window sill.

Step 1
Cut off the bottom of your onion where the roots are attached.  Be sure to leave about a centimeter thickness from the original onion so that the roots have enough nutrients to sprout a new stem.
Step 2
Create a depression in a 2/3 full pot of dirt and place the onion bottom into it.  Cover with 1-2cm of soil and water as needed.
Step 3
When the onion bottom has sprouted a few leaves take it out of the pot and divide the base in half or thirds.  More than one plant may grow out of the onion bottom.  If this occurs separate them as needed and ensure that some roots remain attached to the base.
Step 4
Replant the onions into your pot or garden and trim the leaves down to approx. half or a third of their original size to stimulate bulb development.

And there you have it.  In a matter of weeks you will have your own sustainable crop of onions that you can grow at home.

  2. Testing it out as we speak, this works with other root vegetables as well, but you may have to soak them in water to coax the roots out. I decided to get an early start on my balcony garden. So far I have planted 3 onions, 4 potatoes, chives, basil, oregano, and asparagus. I'm looking forward to when they sprout in a few days!
